Rhum Agricole Saint James: A Jewel in the World of Whisky
Saint James Distillery, a historic producer of rhum agricole, has released a limited edition 18-year-old expression, distilled in 2004 and aged in ex-bourbon barrels. This new release is a jewel in the world of whisky, with only 2,000 bottles available.
The Spirit of Martinique
Rhum agricole, also known as sugarcane juice rum or agricultural rum, is distilled from fresh-pressed sugar cane juice rather than molasses. This traditional method of production has been mastered by Saint James, which was founded in 1765 on the island of Martinique in the Eastern Caribbean.
A Jewel in the Old Rhum Collection
The new 18-year-old expression is part of Saint James’ Old Rhum collection, which also includes 3-year, 12-year, and 15-year statements. This limited release is bottled at 43% ABV and is said to balance structured and full-bodied notes with fruity and finely spiced flavors.
“This very old rum is the fruit of an exceptional aromatic concentration without topping-up, after eighteen years of ageing in our cellars in the tropical climate of Sainte-Marie,” said Marc Sassier, cellar master at Saint James.
A New Take on a Classic: Sortilège Rye Whisky
In other whisky news, Sortilège, a spirits brand renowned for its Maple Whisky, has launched a new innovation: Sortilège Rye Whisky. This new creation is the result of three years of aging in custom oak barrels, using the finest Canadian grains: corn, rye, and barley. The aging process is enriched by a distinctive touch; a toasted maple wood finish, which brings slightly smoky, complex notes for a lingering finish.
“Our ambition with Sortilège Rye Whisky was to create an unforgettable sensory experience while honouring our heritage and commitment to quality,” said Mathieu Houle, Vice President of Marketing at Dandurand Group.
Fireball Whisky’s Hot Lid Hat
In more whisky-related news, Fireball Whisky has released a hot lid hat, which is tall enough to fit an entire 750 mL bottle of Fireball or the liquor of one’s choice. The brand has also released a shorter hat, which can be used to store multiple Fireball 50mL shooters for the occasion.
The hats will be available while supplies last, retailing at $24.99, the suggested retail price for Fireball’s small batch dragon reserve bottle.
