The world of scotch whisky has seen some exciting new releases recently, with a range of expressions that showcase the diversity and creativity of this beloved spirit. From the smoky, peaty flavors of Islay to the smooth, honeyed notes of the Lowlands, there’s something for every palate.
One of the most intriguing releases comes from The Balvenie, with its new Curious Casks expressions. These single cask whiskies have been carefully selected by The Balvenie’s Malt Master, Kelsey McKechnie, and samples coordinator George Paterson, to showcase the unique environment of The Balvenie’s warehouses. The 14 Year Old American Bourbon Barrel expression is a highlight, with aromas of rich toffee and smouldering oak, revealing crisp citrus scents and ever-flowing honey musk. On the palate, candied orange peel is grounded in woody, earthy flavors from beautifully roasted malt and deep vanilla oakiness, resulting in a long and lingering finish.

Another exciting release comes from Rock Island, with its Tequila Edition blended malt scotch whisky. This innovative expression combines single malts from Arran, Islay, Jura, and Orkney, finished in high-quality tequila casks. The resulting tasting notes feature crème brûlée, brown sugar, and toasted oak, with an element of peat, complemented by the citrus and freshness brought by the tequila cask finishing. The bottle design is as striking as the tasting notes, with a hand-drawn design reflecting Mexican culture and heritage.

Kingsbarns has also released a new expression, the Coaltown Ex-Peated, which is matured in ex-peated casks. This Lowland single malt has a soft, smoky spirit, with notes of grilled banana, sweet smoke, and hints of heather on the nose. On the palate, rose water, buttercream, touch of leather, and delicate charred citrus zest are all present.

Laphroaig has also been experimenting with new techniques, with its Elements 2.0 release. This single malt showcases the flavor impact of extending the fermentation period, producing a fruitier whisky that still retains the peaty character that makes Laphroaig so distinctive. The resulting product is a bold, pale gold, non-chill filtered whisky with a fruity nose and palate.

Finally, Brora distillery has released a 44-year-old anniversary whisky to celebrate the third anniversary of its reopening. This single-cask release is limited to 150 bottles and is available exclusively at the distillery. The whisky has been distilled in 1977, aged in Warehouse 1, and celebrates the ‘age of peat’ from 1969-1981.
