The Whisky World Just Got a Whole Lot More Interesting

As a whisky enthusiast, I’m always on the lookout for innovative approaches to this beloved spirit. And, let me tell you, Chivas Brothers has just taken the game to a whole new level with their latest release, The Glenlivet Caskmakers. This exclusive whisky is matured in reconstructed casks, created by combining two casks to create a new type of barrel. Yes, you read that right - reconstructed casks!

The masterminds behind this genius idea are The Glenlivet’s cask masters, who collaborated with master coopers in Jerez, Spain, to develop these hybrid casks. The result is a whisky that’s been matured in a unique blend of ex-Spanish Sherry and charred European oak barrels. The outcome is a complex flavour profile that’s both intriguing and tantalizing.

“As we continue to celebrate our 200-year milestone, The Glenlivet Caskmakers embodies our commitment to pushing the boundaries of cask craftsmanship in whisky making,” said Kevin Balmforth, The Glenlivet cask master.

The Glenlivet Caskmakers is bottled at 40% ABV and will be available exclusively in selected duty-free stores from May 2024, with a suggested retail price of US$225. If you’re a whisky connoisseur, this is definitely one to add to your collection.

But that’s not all - Chivas Brothers has also released a trio of new expressions, including Ballantine’s Golden Hour and Royal Salute’s first-ever vintage release. Ballantine’s Golden Hour is a series of blended Scotch whiskies, each finished in different French oak casks. The inaugural release is finished in ex-Cognac casks, a first for Ballantine’s. It’s bottled at 40% ABV and will be available to purchase at selected Asia Pacific airports for US$279.

Royal Salute’s vintage release is part of a wider series of vintage blends, paying tribute to the brand’s flagship whisky, its 21 Year Old Signature Blend. The Royal Salute 21 Year Old Vintage Blend 2002 Release is bottled at 40% ABV and has an RRP of US$234. It’s available exclusively in global travel retail.
