Sweetens Cove, a name that resonates with both casual golfers and aficionados alike, has made waves not just for its unique charm but also for its latest expansion plans. Nestled in South Pittsburg, Tennessee, this beloved 9-hole course is set to grow with the addition of a new par-3 short course, expanding its offerings and aiming to enhance the visitor experience.
Sweetens Cove’s distinctive landscape
Amid its quirky amenities, Sweetens Cove is preparing to unveil a suite of developments that includes not only a new short course but also inviting stay-and-play cabins, an intricate putting green, a fishing dock, a skeet shooting range, and a restaurant featuring on-site distillation. This ambitious initiative, announced recently, is poised to elevate the entire golfing experience without sacrificing the unique culture that has defined Sweetens Cove since its inception.
A Brief History of Sweetens Cove
Since its launch in 2015, Sweetens Cove has captured the hearts of many. Designed by architects Rob Collins and Tad King of King-Collins Golf Design, this course transformed a formerly flat floodplain into a magnetic golfing destination, fertile ground for social media rapture and acclaim beyond traditional golf publications. As time went on, it transitioned from a humble beginning into a cult favorite, boasting an ownership group that includes renowned figures like Peyton Manning and Andy Roddick.
Among its many distinctive features is a clubhouse that consists merely of a modest shed and the absence of traditional tee times. Instead, players are treated to unlimited-play daily passes, allowing them the freedom to choose their golfing journey each day. Tee-offs occur in a shotgun start fashion, which keeps the atmosphere lively and unpredictable.
Sweetening the Pot: New Developments
In a statement regarding the expansion, Sweetens Cove’s general manager and head pro Mike Adamski acknowledged the high demand and the need for additional accommodations while asserting,
“The demand is incredible. But even with the expansion, we’re maintaining our focus on a quality experience.”
This balancing act aims to retain Sweetens Cove’s distinctive flair while elevating the overall visitor experience. The expansion is being led by Reef Capital Partners, a burgeoning name in the golf real estate sector known for developing properties that enhance the golfing landscape.

Culinary and Distillation Ventures
What sets this expansion apart is the emphasis on culinary experiences paired with Sweetens Cove Whiskey. The inclusion of a small-batch distillery will not only celebrate the spirit of the game but will also offer guests a taste of the distillery’s creations. Reef Capital CEO Jared Lucero emphasized the importance of creating a memorable experience:
“Adding a place to stay, a bit more to do, some amazing food and drinks—those things will make every visit even more memorable, whether you’re playing the course for the first time or the hundredth.”
While the allure of showcasing an elaborate distillery is strong, the new par-3 course promises an innovative approach to golfing itself.
Rob Collins notes that the short course will be designed in accordance with the Sweetens Cove aesthetic, providing players with multiple ways to tackle each hole, contributing to a unique “cross-country” style of play.
A Remarkable Comeback
Sweetens Cove has weathered its fair share of challenges. Earlier this year, the course was forced to shut down for three months after adverse winter conditions impacted its turf quality. However, the property has since reopened, running full steam and already fully booked through the end of 2024. The rapid rise back into the golfing spotlight mirrors the spirit of resilience that characterizes Sweetens Cove.
As the golfing community anticipates these exciting developments, Sweetens Cove continues to redefine what it means to play the game. By blending innovative design with uniquely engaging experiences, they prove that golf is as much about the destination as it is about the game itself.
