Uniting Through Spirits: Rob Dietrich on the Metallica Family and New Whiskeys
Rob Dietrich, the master distiller behind Metallica’s Blackened American Whiskey, recently shared his passion for both whisky and the iconic band’s fanbase during an insightful discussion on Loudwire Nights. In a heartfelt conversation with Chuck Armstrong, Dietrich expressed that the connection among Metallica fans is truly special, describing it as a sense of ʻcamaraderieʼ that binds them all together.
“It’s the kind of camaraderie — we all connect.”
During his interview, Dietrich reminisced about an unforgettable moment at an M72 show in Los Angeles, where the spirit of the Metallica family was on full display. Witnessing actor Jason Momoa dive into the mosh pit alongside fans encapsulated the essence of the community.
“I remember being in L.A. and I was in the Snake Pit,” he recalled. “Here comes Jason Momoa just running in and like diving into the mosh pit and running around like a madman. At that point, he was just like anybody else… It’s the great equalizer.”
Celebrating New Releases in Collaboration
Dietrich’s love for whisky is matched only by his excitement for upcoming collaborations. With the recent launch of new batches such as the 72 Seasons blend—paying tribute to Metallica’s latest studio album—and a second edition of Rye the Lightning, he is committed to expanding his craft. His eyes are set on his latest project, a collaborative whiskey with 10th Mountain Whiskey.
“I was at Stranahan’s when 10th Mountain started and when I was in the army, I was in the 10th Mountain Division,” Dietrich explained, outlining the personal connection to this collaboration. His deep-rooted ties to the mountain division have allowed him to create something unique for their 10th anniversary in Vail, where he has been asked to lend his expertise.
“They’ve been following my career for years in the whiskey industry,” he noted, mentioning that his military background engendered a sense of shared history with the distillery and its founders. “They were interested because I’m a combat veteran of the 10th Mountain Division.”
