Whisky Lovers Rejoice: New Releases and a Chance to Make a Difference
The world of whisky is abuzz with excitement as two new releases hit the shelves. New Riff Distilling has announced the dual release of two 8-year-old whiskeys, the oldest released by the distillery to date. These older expressions of both their 100% Malted Rye and Wheated Bourbon join the distillery’s ‘High Note’ limited edition lineup this fall and will be available later this month predominantly through New Riff’s Whiskey Club and across the bar at the newly renovated Aquifer Tasting Bar. Limited quantities will be available for distribution in Kentucky.
New Riff’s latest releases are a game-changer for whisky enthusiasts.
The Bohemian Wheat Bourbon is made with 65% non-GMO corn, 18% Bohemian floor-malted wheat, 10% unmalted wheat, and 7% dark wheat. This release follows the standard Kentucky sour mash regimen while also incorporating an additional step to the standard process of boiling the unmalted small grains with the corn. Bottled straight from the barrel without chill filtration, it is described as ‘a rare example of a two-grain whiskey comprised of only corn and wheat.’
The Malted Rye 8-Year-Old is the result of several barrels being held back for further aging from the distillery’s very first year of malted rye production. Made with 100% malted rye, it bears the unmistakable savour of a fully matured whiskey, crossed with the delicate spice of malted rye. Both whiskeys are aged 8 years and bottled at cask strength without chill filtration with a suggested retail price of $69.99.
Ardnamurchan 6 year old single Highland malt, a limited edition charity whisky
In other whisky news, Charles Maclean and sons have released a limited edition charity whisky in aid of clean water charity. The Ardnamurchan 6 year old single Highland malt is the first release by The Maclean Foundation, the Scottish charity founded by author Charles Maclean MBE and his three sons, world record-breaking rowers Ewan, Jamie, and Lachlan. The 243 bottles bottled at cask strength (58.6% ABV) are available via Royal Mile Whiskies for £115 per bottle, with a limit of one per buyer given the expected interest in the release. All profits raised will fund clean water projects in Madagascar, which is among the world’s poorest countries.
Perth Museum, the new home of the Stone of Destiny
In Scotland, the Stone of Destiny has found a new home at the Perth Museum, following a £27 million redevelopment project. The museum, located in the former City Hall, will open its doors to the public on Saturday, 30 March. The Stone, also known as the Stone of Scone, was long used in the inauguration of Scottish monarchs. However, it was seized by King Edward I of England as war loot in 1296 and taken to London. It was returned to Scotland in 1996.
The newly renovated Perth Museum, a must-visit for whisky enthusiasts and history buffs alike.
The museum’s centrepiece will be the Stone of Destiny, which has returned to Perthshire for the first time in over 700 years. This is a fantastic opportunity for whisky lovers to explore the rich history of Scotland while enjoying a dram or two.
