Midleton Very Rare Unveils 49 Year Old Whiskey For $50,000

In a remarkable unveiling, Midleton Very Rare has introduced the fifth release in the Silent Distillery Collection, showcasing a 49-year-old single pot still whiskey. This exclusive release marks a significant milestone in the brand’s 40th-anniversary celebration.

Crafted by Master Distiller Max Crockett in 1973 using the world’s largest pot still, this whiskey stands as the oldest expression ever released by Midleton Very Rare. The spirit, distilled at the Old Midleton Distillery before its closure in 1975, has been meticulously aged and nurtured by three successive Master Distillers, culminating in its bottling under the expert guidance of Kevin O’Gorman.

To enhance the whiskey’s complexity, O’Gorman selected a blend of aged barrels for a finishing period in an American ex-bourbon cask dating back to the 1970s. The cask’s integrity was ensured by Master Cooper Ger Buckley, guaranteeing a premium quality product.

The historic whiskey is presented in handblown Waterford Crystal decanters, housed in bespoke oak burr cabinets lined with luxurious antique white leather. Each detail of the packaging exudes elegance and sophistication.

With a recommended retail price of $55,000, this limited-edition release will be available in select markets across the US, UK, and Europe, offering whiskey enthusiasts a rare opportunity to savor a piece of Irish whiskey history.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Delicate hints of peach, apricot, and dates intertwine with notes of sugar-glazed almonds, worn leather, and antique wood. Indulgent sweet tones of treacle toffee and vanilla essence harmonize with earthy woodland aromas, creating a sensory delight.

Taste

The whiskey opens with a vibrant medley of stone and citrus fruits, enveloped in a luscious, silk-coating texture. Oak tannins gradually emerge, accompanied by herbal tea, dark chocolate, and hints of anise and ginger, perfectly balanced with sweet undertones of salted caramel and toffee apple.

Finish

Decades of aging have enriched the whiskey with intense and rich flavors, allowing the pot still spices and fruits to linger on the palate as the oak fades away, leaving a lasting impression.

Master Distiller Kevin O’Gorman expressed his excitement about the release, stating, “Midleton Very Rare Silent Distillery Collection Chapter Five embodies a captivating tale that celebrates the convergence of the finest wood, exceptional whiskey, and the indomitable spirit of master craftsmen. The result is truly remarkable, offering an exceptional liquid that promises an unforgettable experience for whiskey enthusiasts worldwide.”

The Silent Distillery Collection

The Midleton Very Rare Silent Distillery Collection features some of the oldest whiskeys ever produced by the distillery. Chapter 1, a 45 Year Old expression, and Chapter 4, a 48-year-old release, pay homage to the legacy of the Old Midleton Distillery, which now houses the Jameson Experience.

The launch of Chapter Five follows closely on the heels of the brand’s 40-Year-Old Ruby Edition, underscoring Midleton’s commitment to making its anniversary year truly memorable.
