Michter’s Legacy Series: A Whisky Revival

As a whisky enthusiast, I’m always on the lookout for new and exciting releases. And, let me tell you, Michter’s latest Legacy Series is a real treat. This year, the Kentucky-based distillery is bringing back two of its most beloved whiskeys, Shenk’s Homestead Kentucky Sour Mash Whiskey and Bomberger’s Declaration Kentucky Straight Bourbon. Both releases are vintage dated, with the year of bottling proudly displayed on the label.

According to Michter’s president, Joseph J. Magliocco, “While there is some continuity from year to year, our production team makes creative adjustments to each edition of these whiskeys.” And, boy, can you taste the difference. The 2024 Shenk’s release uses rye, malted rye, and for the first time, caramel malt, which adds a nice creaminess to complement the whiskey’s herbaceous qualities and notes of spice.

“This year’s release of Shenk’s and Bomberger’s is a reflection of the passion the team has for making exciting whiskeys with a thoughtful touch of exploration,” said master of maturation Andrea Wilson.

The Bomberger’s release is just as impressive, with the use of malted rye and chinquapin oak, which accentuates its dark chocolate and stewed fruit notes. The chinquapin oak was air dried and seasoned outdoors for 36 months before toasting and charring, giving the whiskey a rich, complex flavor profile.

Michter’s Distillery

Michter’s has a rich history, dating back to 1753 when Swiss Mennonite farmer John Shenk founded Shenk’s distillery in Pennsylvania. The distillery was later renamed Bomberger’s in the 1800s and eventually moved to Kentucky, where it continues to produce some of the finest whiskeys in the world.

As I sat down to taste these two magnificent whiskeys, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation. The 2024 Shenk’s release is bottled at 45.6% ABV and priced at US$110, while the Bomberger’s release is bottled at 54% ABV and priced at US$120. Both are limited releases, so you’ll want to get your hands on them quickly.

In conclusion, Michter’s Legacy Series is a must-try for any whisky enthusiast. With its rich history, creative production team, and commitment to quality, Michter’s is a distillery that’s truly making waves in the world of whisky.
