The Rise of Exceptional Whiskeys: A Look at Recent Releases

Whiskey connoisseurs and newcomers alike should be excited to explore the recent offerings hitting the shelves. From high-rye bourbons to extraordinary aged expressions, the whiskey landscape is thriving with innovation and tradition.

Baker’s Bourbon: A New High-Rye Offering

Baker’s Bourbon has recently unveiled its latest creation, a high-rye expression that promises to delight seasoned bourbon drinkers and novices. By doubling the rye content in the mash bill, this new offering adds complexity while remaining true to Baker’s roots.

Tim Heuisler, a brand ambassador for Baker’s, highlights the distillery’s commitment to small-batch production, stating,

“For over two decades, in my eyes, Baker’s was always kind of the unsung hero of the collection. Roughly five years ago, Baker’s started bottling as a single barrel offering, which really put a spotlight on the brand.”

Their new high-rye bourbon, aged for at least seven years and bottled at 107 proof, promises a rich drinking experience, pulling notes of caramel, dried fruit, and vanilla from the barrel.

Celebrating Distilling Legends

The introduction of the high-rye bourbon pays homage to Baker Beam, a pivotal figure at the distillery. Beam’s hands-on approach, combined with his legacy, has paved the way for Baker’s resurgence in the whiskey world. Heuisler recalls Beam’s deep association with the distillery, saying,

“He was very hands-on when he was an operator at the distillery—not only a whiskey maker, but also a trusted wrench.”

The high-rye expression maintains the single-barrel philosophy that Baker’s is known for, ensuring that each bottle captures the unique characteristics of its respective barrel.

With this new release, Baker’s aims to differentiate itself in a booming bourbon market, forecasted to grow from $7.79 billion in 2023 to $10.69 billion by 2028, according to Research and Markets.

The Remarkable Vanguards Chapter Two by Littlemill

Not far behind in the realm of exceptional whiskey is Littlemill Distillery’s second release in its Vanguards series, a remarkable 47-year-old whisky that honors former manager Jane Macgregor. This expression is the oldest released by Littlemill, which has a rich history that faced challenges following its closure in 1994.

With a backstory steeped in significance, Vanguards Chapter Two aims to celebrate the “unsung heroes” of the distillery. Macgregor was among the first women to hold a distillery license of scale, and this release is a fitting tribute to her pioneering spirit.

Littlemill’s whisky was distilled in October 1976, first maturing in refill bourbon barrels before spending an impressive 27 years in American oak. The whisky is praised for its complex flavor profile, showcasing notes of elderflower, honey, and spices that are reminiscent of summer.

In further homage to Macgregor, Littlemill partnered with glass artist Bethany Wood to create bespoke bottle stoppers, each symbolic of the distillery’s history and craftsmanship.

“There are so many wonderful parallels between our two crafts,” says Bethany Wood, reflecting on the artistry involved in both glassmaking and whiskey distillation.
