As a whisky enthusiast, I’m always on the lookout for something new and exciting. So, when I heard that Ardbeg Distillery was releasing a 34-year-old whisky, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. The Abyss, as it’s called, is an extension of the Ardbeg Corryvreckan, a fan favorite that was first released in 2008.
The Abyss: a deep and rich Islay whisky
The original Corryvreckan was distilled in 1989 and aged in bourbon casks before being finished in “ultra-active” French oak casks. The result was a whisky with “hair-raising depths” that quickly became a fan favorite. But what happened to the remaining spirit? Well, it’s been tucked away, waiting for the perfect moment to be released. And that moment is now.
The Abyss is a rich and unusually dark whisky that draws drinkers deep into swirls of toasted marshmallows and tea leaves, while notes of dark chocolate, pecan, leather, and creosote circle nearby. It’s a truly unique and complex whisky that’s sure to delight even the most discerning palate.
Tradd Moore’s graphic novel reimagines the legend of Prince Breacan and the Corryvreckan whirlpool
To celebrate the release of The Abyss, acclaimed American comic book artist Tradd Moore has created a graphic novel set on “Planet Ardbeg.” The story reimagines the legend of Viking prince Breacan and the Corryvreckan whirlpool, the original whisky’s namesake. Moore’s graphic novel is a must-read for anyone who loves whisky, comics, or just a good story.
The Abyss will be available to purchase from the Distillery Visitor Centre, Ardbeg.com, and through the Moët Hennessy Private Client channel for £21,250 (~$27,143). Each of the 400 limited-edition bottles will come with a copy of the comic.
A bottle of The Abyss, presented in a silver capsule
The whisky is presented in a silver capsule that looks set to travel to other realms, and is inspired by both space and the sea. It’s a truly unique and special release that’s sure to be a hit with whisky enthusiasts.
So, what are you waiting for? Get your hands on a bottle of The Abyss and experience the rich, dark flavors of this 34-year-old Islay whisky.
