A New Era for Irish Whiskey: Boann Distillery Unveils Trio of Single Pot Still Whiskeys
As I stood amidst the rolling hills of Co. Meath, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of excitement and pride as I witnessed the launch of Boann Distillery’s latest creation: a trio of Single Pot Still Irish Whiskeys. This momentous occasion marks a significant milestone in the distillery’s journey, and I’m thrilled to share my thoughts on this remarkable achievement.
The Boann Distillery, nestled in the heart of the Boyne Valley
The Boann Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey range, comprising Marsala, Madeira, and Pedro Ximinéz expressions, is the culmination of almost five years of dedication and hard work. This new release is a testament to the distillery’s commitment to reviving the heritage of Irish whiskey, a spirit that once dominated the global market.
“This is the beginning of a journey to bring Irish whiskey back to where it once was, to a time when Ireland dominated the world whiskey market.” - Pat Cooney, Boann MD and founder
The three expressions, each with its unique flavor profile, are a masterclass in blending tradition with innovation. The Pedro Ximinéz release, for instance, was matured in casks discovered in Andalucía, Spain, which had been part of a vintage PX Solera system for over 60 years. The Madeira release, on the other hand, was aged in 20-year-old vintage casks from the renowned Madeira house, Justino’s.

As I sipped on each expression, I was struck by the complexity and depth of flavors, a true testament to the craftsmanship of the Boann team. The Marsala release, with its initial maturation in ex-Bourbon barrels and subsequent finishing in Superiore and Fine Marsala butts, is a masterclass in balancing sweet and savory notes.

As I raised a glass to this remarkable achievement, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride and excitement for the future of Irish whiskey.
